The Bull Terrier
Origins
The Bull Terrier (also named English Bull Terrier) has its origins in the mid 1800s period, in the Great Britain regions and it was used for vermin control, bloody pit fights. They are now considered as pets suitable for experienced owners.
Appearance
The Bull Terrier belongs to the medium dog breeds category, weighting about 19-37 kg, with a height of 50-60 cm at the withers. The Bull Terrier dogs display a dense and short coat, colored in white or any combination of white and fawn, black, brindle, tan. They have erect ears and a pointy tail, the head being shaped as an egg, with a flat top. The eyes are dark and small, closely set and triangle shaped. The body is robust built and muscular, the feet are powerful and compact.
Grooming
The Bull Terrier has a short and flat coat, thus the grooming isn’t a demanding job. Brushing and rubing down the coat occasionally is required to keep the coat glossy and clean.
Health Facts
The Bull Terrier has a lifespan of 12-14 years. This breed is prone to several health disorders, ranging from dermic (skin allergies, rashes, itching – from fleas, insect bites, mites, mosquitoes), cardiologic (heart problems, heart failure), deafness, seizures, luxating patella, thyroid problems, renal cortical hypoplasia.
Temperament and Lifestyle
The English Bull Terrier is a rather stubborn and difficult to train breed, but intelligent and powerful. They need constant activity, loving the human company. They behave well with older children. They are excellent guard dogs. They need an appropriate dog socialization from the early stages of life (especially in the dog obedience training effort), because of their instinctive and aggressive attitude. They are energetic and need constant attention; getting bored can make them destructive.
