The Brittany

Origins
The Brittany breed (also named Brittany Spaniel, Epagneul Breton, Brittany Wiegref, Brittany Pointer, American Brittany) has its origins in the region of France, in the late 19th century. It was mainly used as a bird hunting dog and it is sometimes seen in dog competitions. There is a differentiation between the French style Brittany and the American style ones (the French ones are similar to the smaller spaniels, while the American Brittany is faster and a bit taller).

Appearance
The Brittany belongs to the medium dog breeds category, weighting 15-19 kg and a height of 45-50 cm at the withers. The body is covered with a coat colored in white tan or orange (mostly seen at the American Brittany dogs) liver, white or any tricolor combination. The body is compact and athleticly built; the legs are long. The head displays a pointy muzzle with a dark brownish nose, medium ears that drop on the side of the head, a face mask (many times a brown and tan at the sides and flashy white stripe right in the middle of the head), dark eyes, a strong mouth and jaws. The tail is usually docked, although sometimes puppies are born with a shorter or longer tale.

Grooming
The Brittany dogs are medium shedders, but they need constant attention, since their coat is soft to touch and beautiful. A twice a week brushing will prevent the coat from matting and it will keep it in good conditions.

Health Facts
The Brittany dogs have a lifespan of about 10-12 years. They are prone to various health disorders, ranging from seizures, heart and liver problems, skeletal (spinal disorders), glaucoma.

Temperament and Lifestyle
The Brittany is eager and cheerful dog, loyal to their owners. These dogs behave well around small pets and older children if they are poperly socialized. They demand alot of exercising because they are energetic and love to play. The Brittany wants to be the center of attention; they are sometimes stubborn and independent. They could also be efficient watchdogs, because of their protective attitude.
