Origins
The American Water Spaniel, also known as Skiff dog, dates from the mid 19th century but there’s no much documentation on his true origins. This breed  was mainly used for hunting and water-retrieving the hunted game. It was recognized as a purebred in the period of 1920-1940.

Appearance and Grooming
The American Water Spaniel is a small to medium size breed (37-45 cm), with a weight of about 19kg for males and 14-16 for females. His coat is curled and dense, effective and resistant to cold weather and water. His coat’s color varies from chocolate to brown and liver. His head is broad and his body structure is compact and well-proportioned and it ends with a rocker-shaped tail. His eyes color ranges from brown, dark tone to hazel and yellowish brown. Grooming shouldn’t be excessive: brush and trim his coat on a weekly basis; clean his ears and body if he’s been in the water; clip the hair around his feet.

Health and Lifestyle
The American Water Spaniel has a lifespan of about 13-14 years. This breed has no specific health issues, but it can suffer from diabetes, various
allergies, cancer, hair diseases, cataracts, hip dysplasia, even cardiac abnormalities.

Temperament
The American Water Spaniel is very intelligent, enthusiastic and eager, a wonderful companion. He is energetic, dedicated, loyal. This breed behaves really well around children that they have been brought up with, and around other animals. He can get rather bored if neglected and is the center of fun and activity in the family. He displays alertness and protection when dealing with strangers and his barking can be loud and noisy. He enjoys plenty of playing and exercising in the yard (you can place some fences around the yard) and he is a great candidate for a proper dog training. He is very adaptable and very responsive to human commands. His favorite command will be “fetch” as he loves to swim and retrieve thrown things in the water. Just  surround him with love and company and you will gain a great life friend.
