The Akita

Origins
The Akita Inu breed has its origins in Japan, the prefecture of Akita, more precisely in the middle of the 16th century. It was developed by a samurai clan and it is considered national treasure and monument by all the japonese. There is a secondary breed tree, the American Akita, but it’s not that common.

Appearance and Grooming
This breeds is overall 69 cm in shoulder height, but the weight differs from males to females: 34-53 kg. Their coat can have different colors, ranging from pure white, red, brindle to sesame. The white color is commonly displayed on the cheeks, chest, neck, tail, body. Their coat is doubled, thick, straight, waterproof and it requires regular grooming attention, especially during the winter season, when they shed heavily.

Health and Lifestyle
The Akita breed has a lifespan of around 10-12 years. They can be affected by a series of health problems: system immunity problems, skin condition, lupus, cancer. Check vet advice on better handling these health issues.

Temperament
The Akita is inteligent, calm, devoted and powerful, an overall great watchdog, independent and stubborn, not a perfect candidate when starting a proper dog training schedule. They love the winter weather and enjoy playing in the snow. They act protective when dealing with strangers, and aggressive when surrounded by dogs of the same sex or other smaller pets.

In other words, the Akita is a really loyal family dog.
